Back Pain Q & A

What are the symptoms of back pain?

Back pain is equally common among men, women, and children, and it can range from mild to severe. Symptoms are usually obvious and include:

  • Shooting pain
  • Pain that radiates to an arm or leg
  • Restricted movement
  • Burning, aching muscles
  • Inability to sit, stand, or recline
  • Muscle spasms

What are the types of back pain?

There are many types of back pain, divided into two main categories: acute and chronic.

Acute back pain

Acute back pain is temporary and usually resolves within three months with minimal intervention. Examples of acute back pain include muscle spasms, nerve problems, strains, falls, or minor injuries.

Chronic back pain

Even if it comes and goes intermittently, when back pain extends beyond three months, it’s considered chronic. Examples of chronic back pain are spinal stenosis, arthritis of the spine, and herniated discs.

What causes back pain?

When you consider all the movement, twisting, and lifting your back endures in a single day, it’s no wonder that back pain is one of the main reasons men and women seek chiropractic care. Identifying the problem is the first step in developing your custom treatment plan. Conditions that contribute to back pain include:

  • Strained muscles
  • Herniated, bulging, or slipped discs
  • Poor posture
  • Improper lifting position
  • Poor or prolonged sitting position
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spinal abnormalities, such as scoliosis
  • Arthritis
  • Injuries
  • Obesity
  • Physical inactivity
